Playing Online Baccarat in Tennessee

While Baccarat is among the simplest of the table games, it is often overlooked because many people in the U.S. aren’t familiar with the game. Unlike poker and other table games, this game offers easy rules and winning options. In fact, while this is technically a “card game”, the players aren’t actually involved in gameplay. They simply bet on the outcome of the games based on baccarat odds and other factors.

In baccarat, games can result in a player win, banker win, or tie. All that is required of bettors is to assess the hands dealt and place their bets based on their predicted outcome.

The Rules

The first thing to know about baccarat is how the cards are scored. Face cards in this game are worth zero points. This is a huge difference from most card games, where face cars often have the trump or a value of 10 points. Here, they’re essentially worthless.

The aces are all worth one point. Numbered cards are played at face value, except the 10 card, which has a zero point value like the face cards.

The dealer will start by dealing two cards to the player and the banker, respectively. The cards are placed face-up on the table and the points are added together. Whoever scores nine points, or the closest to it without going over, is the winner.

Double-digit totals are possible in this game. In order to keep the score at nine or below, hands over 10 points will drop the first digit from the total and use the remaining number as the score. For example, if your cards total 16, you’d add the one and six for a total score of seven.

There are some standard exceptions and guidelines based on specific deals:

  • If the banker or the player is dealt cards that total less than five points, a third card will be dealt.
  • If either hand totals eight or nine, both must stand.
  • In the event of a tie (equal points), tie bets will be paid as wins. All other bets will be returned in a “no action” outcome.
  • Tie bets pay at 8- or 9-to-1 odds. It’s harder to hit a tie, but worth the wager if you do.

The best part of playing baccarat online, of course, is that the exact rules of gameplay don’t matter. The computer-generated dealer will ensure that all rules are followed for accurate dealing and wagering, and all that you have to do is place your bets where you think you’ll win.

Is Online Baccarat Legal in Tennessee?

The short answer is yes, and no. Online free play and social casinos where no real money is exchanged are open to all U.S. residents and there are no laws restricting them because they are played using virtual credits or other non-monetary forms of compensation.

In the state of Tennessee, however, it is currently illegal to play at online casinos that use real money. A new law was just passed to open sports betting in the state, so there may be hope for other gambling legalization in the future. For now, though, you’re best sticking to the free play and fantasy sites where you can work on perfecting your game and having a good time.
